I’ve got great news for you Verizon customers out there today! Verizon has a mobile phone tracking service called “Family Locator” which was formerly known as “Chaperone®”. There are some interesting features to the cell phone tracker service that I would like to share with you today.

First, it appears that Verizon uses GPS as its primary method of locating a cell phone. Unlike the Sprint Family Locator or the AT&T FamilyMap services, only certain phones in the Verizon lineup will work with this service. To begin using this service, you simply need to check to see if the cell phone that you want to be able to locate is on the list of supported devices.

If you have determined that it is in fact on the list of supported devices, the next step is to visit the Verizon Family Locator website and enter the cell phone number that you would like to be able to begin tracking, Then you will be able to sign up for this tracking service. The cost is $9.99 a month for up to 10 lines on your account.

Are All Verizon Plans Eligible?

It’s important to note that only Verizon customers who have a Verizon Family SharePlan® will be able to utilize this tracking service. After you have purchased a tracking package for a particular phone on your account, you will be able to use either the browser on your smartphone or an Internet connected computer to determine the location of the particular phone.

What’s My Favorite Features?

One of the features that stood out to me when I was doing research on Verizon’s cell phone tracking service is called “Departure and Arrival Updates”. I’ve never seen this feature on any of the other cell phone tracking applications that I have reviewed so far. Let me give you an idea of how this feature works. You can configure this feature to alert you anytime your children leave your home or arrive at your home. This is a great way of keeping track of children in the fast paced world of today.

They also have a feature called “Schedule Updates” which is very similar to Sprint’s “Safety Check” feature that allows you to configure the system to automatically sends you a text message or an e-mail at the time of day of your choosing. This message will contain the exact location of the particular mobile phone at the precise time of day that you have set it up for.

Limitations Of The Verizon Family Locator Service

It’s also worth noting that there are some limitations that I see with this cell phone tracking service. One such limitation seems to be that not all of the cellular devices supported on the Verizon network will work with this package as far as I can tell. Another limitation seems to be that it will not function if you are roaming.

I should also mention that if you want to receive the most accurate location possible, there is an application that must be downloaded and installed on the cell phone that you want to track. When this application has been installed on the phone, the phone will attempt to determine its location via the vast GPS satellite network that is available to it.

If you’re a Verizon Customer and this GPS tracking service seems interesting to you, why not give it a try? If you do decide to try it, please do me a favor and send me an email telling me what you thought about it.

If the phone has a clear line of sight to GPS satellites, and is able to receive the GPS signal, the results of the location will be reported as the actual GPS coordinates. If the phone is not able to receive the signal from the GPS satellite network, other methods such as triangulation will be used to determine the location of the phone and the accuracy of the location will not be as precise.

Verizon claims that their service can generally determine the location of the cellular phone from 50 to 150 meters. The accuracy level is determined by a number of factors such as the surrounding terrain, weather conditions, and satellite visibility.

If you happen to be a Verizon customer, you may want to give the Family Locator program a try.
