When I was reading through my long list of emails this morning, I noticed a bit of a trend.

There were three emails in my inbox from people wanting to know how to find location by cell phone number. Whenever I receive a surge of emails containing the same question, I make an effort to put an article on my website to answer the question. The way I see it, if more than one person is asking the same question, there’s bound to be plenty of people out there wondering the same thing.

It seems like there might be some confusion and people may actually be confusing two different technologies here. I think that there are actually two questions that people have. The first one is; how to find location of a cell phone number?

Those who are asking this question are probably looking for some kind of software or service that they can use to simply type in a cellular phone number and instantly determine where the phone is located. Unfortunately, there are no such applications in existence as of yet.

Is There A Free Cell Phone Lookup Service?

I’ve spent countless hours searching the Internet for free cell phone lookup services to only be disappointed time and time again. The closest I’ve been able to find to a free service to do this are a few services that allow you to enter the cellular phone number and they will tell you the town where the cellular phone is registered.

If you’re searching for a cellular phone number in a metropolitan area that has several towns close to each other, it’s very likely that the cellular phone number could be registered to one part of town and the person could live in an entirely different part of town. I believe that the reason for this is the service is simply telling you the location of the cell phone service provider that the person subscribes to. For example, if the cell phone number that you are trying to look up is an AT&T number, I think these services will simply give you the address of the place that sold the phone to the individual.

In rural areas where there aren’t several towns butting up next to each other, these services may be more useful because the chances of the owner of the cellular phone actually living in the town that the service reported to you is a little bit higher.

The Other Side Of The Coin

Another group of individuals that e-mail me seem to be looking for a phone tracker application that they can download and install on their cellular phone which will allow them to key in any cellular phone number and magically see the location of the phone displayed on their screen. While it’s true that cell phone tracking technology has made amazing advancements in recent years, this type of application is still science fiction. It simply doesn’t exist.

The fact that so many people seem to be looking for such a product is a clear indication that someday, someone will figure out how to create a software application that can actually do this. When they do, you can be sure that I’ll be telling you about it here at!

Tracking Services That Come Close To Providing Instant Location Detection

There are some services such as AT&T FamilyMap, Verizon Family Locator, and Sprint Family Locator that people can subscribe to that will allow them to begin tracking the specific phones that are associated with their cell phone user account right away. These services don’t require you to download or install an application onto any of the cell phones that people would like to track but the phones must be associated with the account. You can’t just type in Jenifer Lopez’s cell phone number and start stalking her.

How Do Cell Phone Tracking Apps Actually Work?

All other cell phone tracking applications must be installed on the particular phone that is going to be tracked using GPS satellites. It’s simply not possible to merely enter a phone number into an application on your phone or into a website on the Internet and instantly see the location of the phone. Like I said before, it’s not out of the questions that this might be possible someday in the future but as of now, no such technology exists for civilian use.

The Bottom Line

So, if you want to find someone’s location by cell phone number, I’m afraid the best advice I can give you is to try a service that you have to pay to use and search for the location of that particular phone in their databases. If the service is actually able to find the name of the person who owns the particular cell phone, it will then search for other related information that they have in their databases that corresponds to the particular individual in question. In some cases information like the person’s last known address, the person’s place of employment, and the type of vehicle that the person drives may also be available.

How Private Information Becomes Public

Many people think that just because they have a cell phone or an unlisted number that their information is safe and secure but this is simply not the case. Here’s why. Anytime someone enters their phone number, name, or address into a form on the Internet, the owner of the website could be collecting information about you.

They will usually have a long and detailed statement called a Privacy Policy that actually explains how they intend to use the information you provide them. Few people, however, actually take the time to read these lengthy legal documents and they will simply check the box saying that they have read the privacy agreement without actually reading it.

The most common reason they’re collecting the data is so they can sell your information to someone who is willing to purchase it. Collecting personal information about people is BIG BUSINESS and there’s a lot of money to be made by those who do a good job of collecting information that is generally considered to be private. Company’s will purchase this information and sell access to it to people like you and I who are willing to pay to search through it.

Sometimes All You Have To Do Is Ask

If you have the need to track a particular person with their cell phone and you are on good terms with them or you work in a position of authority over them, you may be able to convince them to install a cell phone tracking application on their phone. In cases where you would like to begin tracking the location of your children’s cellular phones, it may not be a problem since you are their parent. All you need to do is install the application on their phone and you’re in business.

If you have employees who carry cellular phones owned by your company, it may be fine if you install cell phone tracking applications on the phones because you are tracking an asset that belongs to your company which in this case is the cellular phone. I would, however, advise you to seek your own legal counsel before you install cell phone tracking applications and begin tracking someone who works for you. Additionally, you might want to have them sign a release acknowledging that they are aware that you will be tracking their company cell phone.

I hope this article has done a good job of clearing up any confusion that you may have about this type of GPS phone tracking technology and discovering information about the owner of a particular cell phone number. If it has, why not help your friends out and tell them about this article?
