My Prediction About When the iPhone 5 Release Date Will Actually Be
Today on my free phone tracker blog, I’ll be talking about something a bit different, the iPhone 5. iPhone fans are an insatiable group of individuals. They just can’t seem to get enough of this amazingly popular cell phone from Apple. The iPhone 4g hasn’t even hit the market and people are emailing me and asking if I have heard any rumors about the iPhone 5.
I find this “cult like” following that the iPhone has to be quite an interesting phenomenon. With a lot of electronic devices, people get upset when a new version hits the market because that means that the version of tech gadget that they just purchased will soon be out dated. For some reason, this doesn’t seem to hold true with the iPhone and people are already talking about the new iPhone 5g. Mind you that this is even before 5g technology exists!
I’ve received several emails in the last month from hungry Apple cell phone fans wanting the “inside scoop” on when the iPhone 5 release date might be. I wish I had a good answer that I could give them but I really don’t. All I’ve heard are rumors as well.
The rumors of the iPhone 4g are still floating around and people are already looking to skip a generation. Maybe they’re just trying to get an idea of when the iPhone 5 is likely to hit the shelves so they will know if they want to fork over their money for the 4g version or hold out for an iPhone 5g? This seems to be the most likely answer in my opinion.
So what are these iPhone 5 rumors saying about this mythological cell phone from Apple? Well, some are saying that there won’t actually be a version of their phone that carries the 4g label. If you look back at the history of the popular cell phone, you’ll see that the last two versions were dubbed the 3g and then the 3gs. Then along came the 4.
It seems logical that Apple would want to take advantage of the media frenzy that is currently surrounding the super fast 4g networks. Sprint and T-Mobile are shouting from the rooftops about how great their 4g network is. AT&T and Verizon are both scheduled to roll out their 4g network sometime in 2011. (Update: Both Verizon and At&T now have 4g networks in limited markets.)
It seems like it would be a good idea for Apple to “ride this wave” and append the 4g label to the next version of the Apple Cell Phone. One popular iPhone 5 rumor is that Apple will release this version in the first quarter of 2011. This seems a little early to me though. After all, the most recent version was only released in June of 2010. Again, if you look at the history, Apple seems to like to release their new line in the summer months.
Possible iPhone 5g Features
What features will the iPhone 5g possibly have? Well, one rumor is that it will have a digital wallet feature. This will eventually turn the phone into an electronic credit or debit card. Other rumors say that this version won’t really have a lot of extra features. The addition of the front facing camera was a HUGE added feature for the fourth generation phone but the word on the street is that a fifth generation of the phone might only have some minor changes like a faster processor, maybe some more memory, 4g compatibility, and certainly a better antenna than the fourth generation iPhone had. If you remember, that antenna was plagued with problems and this ended up being a big “black eye” for Apple.
What’s My Best Guess?
If I was a gambling man, I would say that the iPhone 5 release date will be some time in the summer of 2011 based on Apple’s track record for when they seem to like to release their latest and greatest version of their flagship cell phone.
Update 8-10-2011: I’ve recently heard a rumor that Apple has decided to hold off on releasing a 4g compatible cell phone while the LTE chip manufacturing industry figures out a way to make 4g chips smaller and use less battery power. Does this mean that the iPhone 5 won’t be a 4g phone? That would be my guess but we’ll just have to wait to see. I, for one, am on the edge of my seat and eager with anticipation to find out!
How Much Is The iPhone 5 Going To Cost?
What will the iPhone 5 price be? It’s really hard to say. Apple tends to like to push their luck and try to squeeze every last nickle out of their customers. A look at the outrageously high price of the iPad is a perfect example of this. They priced it really high and guess what, millions of people gladly paid it. One thing that is certain though. Whatever the price happens to be on a fifth generation Apple cell phone, the faithful fans will gladly open their wallets to Apple for a chance to own the newest in their cell phone lineup.
My Latest Prediction
8-21-2011 Update: Okay, lately I’ve been getting the feeling that Apple will pass on releasing an iPhone 4g model and jump right into the iPhone 5. Let me tell you why. If you own an iPhone, you probably realize that the most recent version of the iPhone operating system is iOS 4.3.5. If you follow Apple technology at all, you probably also realize that Apple has already announced that in the “Fall of 2011” a HUGE new upgrade to iOS will be available and guess what, it will be called iOS 5!
Now, doesn’t it seem logical that if Apple is jumping right into iOS 5 and adding over 200 new features that they would want to time the release of the new operating system with the release of the iPhone 5? I don’t know about you but it sure does to me!
Based on this new information, I believe that we’ll see both the iPhone 5 and iOS 5 operating system unleashed in the fall of 2011. As a matter of fact, I’m predicting that it will be in the first half of October!
There’s still no official word from Apple but I’ll pop back in with the official iPhone 5 release date when I know more. Please check back at Free Cell Phone Tracker for the latest updates on this phone which will be posted just as soon as they are available.
11-18-2013 Update: As you probably already know, Apple has released the iPhone 4 and 5. Now people are eagerly anticipating the release of version 6!
10-19-2014 Update: Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. The iPhone 6 is now official available. Next up, iPhone 7!
