Prey Anti-Theft ScreenshotToday I’m happy to share another free cell phone locator application with you called “Prey”. As you most likely know by now, many of the modern phone tracking applications are designed for the purpose of keeping track of your family members, co-workers, and friends but this one is a little different.

The developers of this software primarily made it for the purpose of tracking down and retrieving your stolen smartphone. It can even be used to track and recover a stolen laptop or tablet in some cases!

This application is open source and it works on phones that are running the Google Android OS as well as PC’s, Linux computers, and Mac’s.

Here’s how this powerful software works. The first thing that you need to do is download and install the application on the devices that you would like to be able to track. During the installation process, you will be asked to sign up for a free account and register all of your devices with Prey. Then, once it is set up and running on your devices, their service is able to help you recover your lost or stolen device whenever you may have the need.

If you ever need to recover your lost or stolen device, you can use the Prey Anti-Theft web based tool to report that your specific device is missing. There are several options on this screen that you can choose from such as what methods to use for locating your device, the frequency in which the system will attempt to find your device, and how often you will receive tracking reports.

You can also choose a very helpful feature that will cause an alarm to sound or display a message on the device’s screen. You can even send a code to your stolen phone or laptop that will lock it and prevent its unauthorized access.

Once you have reported that the device is missing, the software will begin looking for it. If the thief happened to turn it off to try to prevent you from tracking it, the Prey tracking system will keep trying to locate it at predetermined intervals. After your device has been turned back on, the system will try to pin point its location and then forward the coordinates to you in an email.

Most modern computers don’t have GPS receivers built into them so the software will attempt to use Wi-Fi hotspots to find the location of your stolen computer. Keep in mind that this method of tracking may not be very accurate. It will even turn on the webcam on your computer so that you can take photos of the thief!

If the thief who stole your phone changes the SIM card in an attempt to reactivate your phone and begin using it as their own, the security tracking software will cleverly detect the presence of the newly installed SIM card and continue to provide you with the info that you will need to recover your stolen phone.

If you have the need to track several devices, you can upgrade to their “Prey Pro” version. It is capable of tracking over 500 devices as well as unlocking plenty of other powerful security tracking features that are built especially for power users.

If you are in search of a no nonsense security tracking app, I would suggest that you give Prey Anti-Theft a try today. For those of you who are interested, it can be downloaded here: Download Prey Anti-theft.
