Today on my website, I’ll be writing about an interesting cell tracker that is designed specifically for tracking sporting events.

This is an interesting spin on free phone tracker applications that I think many of you will be quite interested in. The name of the program is Map My Tracks. This app has some interesting social networking cell phone tracker features that are built into it. Much like the popular Google Latitude app used to have, social networking apps that utilize GPS are slowly carving out a place in the lives of millions.

It’s a handset based application which means you will need to download and install the app on your phone if you would like to use it. It will function with the GPS receiver that is build into your phone or an external GPS receiver that plugs into your phone. Although the ability to plug a GPS receiver into a phone seems nice, most phones come with them built into the phone so I don’t really see devices like these catching on.

What Makes This App Different?

Unlike other free cell tracker software, this one is designed around sporting activities and it can even help you train more efficiently. Something that is cool about this program is that it will automatically upload your training information to what is called a “personal activity log” on the Internet. You can configure each track so that it is either public for anyone to see or private for your personal use only.

I expect that many athletes who participate in long distance events will use this application to document their performance during their training sessions and possibly even during their competitions. The ability to share the data that is associated with the training session is bound to help trainers and coaches analyze the performance of their athletes and customize future training regimens.

As you exercise, whether you are walking, running, biking, or boating, this software will record the path you take and upload it automatically for you. You can then go back and review the “cell track” and analyze data like the route you took, what your maximum speed was, what your average speed was, and more.

When you go back and review the cell track you can choose to have the data overlaid on a street map or a satellite map. If you have this data configured to be public, your coaches and teammates can look at the data to offer you encouragement, progress reports, and even training tips.

What Makes This App Social?

This software can also automatically upload your location to Twitter, Fire Eagle, and FriendFeed so that your friends will always know where you are. If they happen to be close by, they can call you and you can get together to train together or just to say hello.

How To Download The App?

It’s really easy to get started using this program. You can get started in about five minutes and there are over 100 mobile devices that will work with the software. One of the best things about this program is that it is completely free to download and use.

To get started, you’ll first want to go here https://www.mapmytracks.com/sign-up and signup for as free account. The next thing you’ll need to do is download the software to your phone. You can download it from the same link that I just gave you to sign up. If you have an iPhone, a BlackBerry, a Lenovo, a Motorola, a Nokia, a Panasonic, a Samsung, a Siemens, or a Sony Ericsson phone, this app should work on your phone. Unfortunately, there isn’t a version that works on the Android OS at the moment.

Who Else Might Find This App Useful?

While taking the time to learn about this free phone tracking software, it occurred to me that many people other than just athletes would find this app to be useful. For example, sailboat racers could really benefit from the features that are included in this product. Additionally, cross county off road racing teams could make very good use of the app’s ability to upload location data. These events require a large support crews to keep the competitors up and running and an app like this would be perfect for them.

If you’re interested in a tracking application that is geared for your active lifestyle, give Map My Tracks a try today!
