Lookout Mobile Security ScreenshotIf you own a Google Android powered smartphone or tablet computer you should be concerned about keeping it safe from viruses, spyware, and malware. Fortunately, there is a free app called Lookout Mobile Security that is perfect for doing just that!

I actually have this application installed on my HTC Thunderbolt and my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I’ve never had a problem with it. As a matter of fact I quite like it and it’s really nice not having to worry about whether or not I have a nasty app installed on my device. There is a free version of this app and a premium version. If you would like to activate the premium features, it will cost you $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year.

Getting Started with This Free Phone Security Application

To get started using this application, you can download it on Google Play. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can get this app in the Apple Apps Store. After downloading and installing the app, you’ll need to sign up for a free account. It’s quite easy to do this. All you need to do is enter your email address and choose a password. Then after your free account is set up, the application will automatically begin scanning all of the apps that you currently have installed on your phone. Depending on how many apps you happen to have installed, this could take several minutes to complete. If it finds any questionable apps, it will let you know. Likewise, if it doesn’t, it will tell you that everything is okay.

Real-Time Security Checks

Once you have this software installed on your phone, it will stay running in the background, even if you restart your device. Then, anytime you download a new app, the software will scan the application to make sure it’s safe.

Automatic Backups

This popular cell phone security software will even automatically back up your contacts list. If you buy the premium version, it will back up your contacts, photos, and call logs. In the event that your device ever crashes and you lose your data, you can restore it from the Lookout web based interface. You can also download your data from their website.

Locating Your Lost or Stolen Device

While logged into the Lookout website, you can simply click on the “Find My Device” link that is found in the left hand sidebar and the app will quickly report the location of your device. While testing this feature on my phone, I was quite surprised that it not only displayed the location of my phone on a Google Map, it actually displayed the exact street address of where my phone was located.

Another Useful Free Feature For Finding a Lost Cell Phone

There is another feature that you can use if you happen to just misplace your phone in your house somewhere. The name of this feature is “Scream”. Click this feature and your phone will start playing the sound of a siren at full volume. This works even if your phone is set to silent! When you activate this feature, the screen on your phone will flash red and blue to help you find it in the dark.

Other Premium Features

Premium members have access to a couple of other cool features. One is remote lock and the other is remote wipe.
