Today on www.freecellphonetracker.net it’s my pleasure to spend some time introducing you to the Verizon cell phone navigation application which they affectionately call VZ Navigator.

I must admit that when I first started learning about this service, I thought it was a navigation / cell phone tracker service but it quickly became clear that this isn’t the case.

I have a separate post on my website that is about the Verizon Family Locator for those of you who are looking for information on their tracking service. I think it’s important that people realize that the Verizon Family Locator and VZ Navigator are completely separate services because I think a lot of people confuse the two.

Despite my initial impressions, the VZ Navigator service is actually Verizon’s version of a GPS based cell phone navigation app. It has the capability of determining the location of a cell phone but for the purpose of helping its users find their way from one location to another and not for the purpose of helping others track down the location of the person who is carrying the phone.

My Favorite VZ Navigator Feature

This Verizon software functions like a in-vehicle navigation device. One very nice feature of this program is that it actually supports voice recognition. When you are in any data entry screen, you can simply press and hold the “send” button on your phone. After a brief moment, you’ll hear a tone. After you hear the tone, you simply speak the address into your phone. Then your phone will record this address as your desired destination, use its GPS receiver to determine it’s current GPS coordinates, and provide you with spoken turn by turn directions to the destination.

Some Other Interesting VZ Navigator Features

There are other great features that are built into the application like a gas station finder, a 411 information finder, and a local search feature for finding local attractions such as restaurants or entertainment. It even has a feature called traffic integration that will use historical traffic flow data to help you avoid traffic jams.

The closest feature that I can seem to find that is similar to a GPS tracking app is called “Place Messaging” that will allow you to update your Facebook status with your current location directly from inside the app.

How Much Does This Service Cost?

Unlike the popular Google Maps smartphone navigation app, this isn’t a free service. If you would like to use it, Verizon has one of three pricing plans that you can choose from. You can have unlimited use for $9.99 a month, use for a week for $4.99, or use for a day for $2.99.

8-17-11 Update: I just checked my Verizon user account and the only pricing option that I could find was the $9.99 plan for unlimited use. Based on this information, I have to assume that the “per week” and “per day” pricing options are no longer available.
