Today I’ll be telling you about another really cool application that uses the GPS receiver in your smartphone in an amazingly cool way. How many times have you driven all over town just to find the lowest price on gas? I know that I used to do this all the time. I was so bad about this that I would go quite a bit out of my way just to save a couple of pennies on gas.

Oftentimes, I would spend quite a bit of time driving around to find the lowest price and even then I wasn’t sure if the price I was paying was really the lowest in town. Let’s not get me started about what I was like on a road trip! I would get off at an exit that seemed like it would have a gas station and I would drive around forever looking for the lowest price because experience had taught me that the most expensive gas stations are usually right off of the exit.

Well, I don’t do this anymore and I’m loving it!

Introducing The Gasbuddy App!

Gasbuddy App ScreenshotThere’s a really cool and powerful application that takes all the stress and worry out of finding the best price on gas and it’s called “Gas Buddy” I use the Gasbuddy app for Android application because I happen to own a Google Android powered smartphone but you can use it on other phones as well.

This app will currently work on Android, iPhones, Blackberry, and Windows phones. Those are the phones that are supported at the time that this article was written but I imagine that as time goes on, it will become available on other phones as well.

How It Works

After you download the application from your favorite apps store, you’ll have to set up a Gasbuddy account. It’s free and easy to do this. All you have to do is choose a username, password, and give them your email address. That’s it and you’re ready to start finding the lowest prices on gas wherever you happen to be!

There are actually a couple of ways to use the application. My favorite is the “one touch” method that uses the GPS receiver in my phone. I find that this is the best way for me to use it because when I’m traveling, it’s quick and easy. I just launch the application on my phone and tap the green gas pump icon on the app’s start screen. The program then uses the GPS receiver in my phone to determine where I am at the moment and within a few seconds, it displays an extensive list of the reported gas prices that are near me.

I then quickly scroll through the list of gas stations that have reported prices to find the lowest one. If I’m in an area that I don’t know well, I can even tap on the result of the gas station I want to go to and Google Maps will give me turn by turn directions right to it!

The other way to use it is to simply type in the city, state, or zip code that you want to search in for the best price into the search bar on the home screen of the software and then tap enter. Within a few seconds, you’ll have your list of results displayed on your phone’s screen.

Why I Think This is The Best Gas Price App

There are other apps that can be used for finding the lowest prices on gas but I really like this one. I’ve found that it works great on my phone and for the most part it’s usually fairly accurate. One of the things I like about it is that when the list of results are displayed, it tells me how long ago the price was actually reported. If the price was reported a long time ago, it may have changed but I’ve found the Gasbuddy gas prices to be pretty accurate most of the time.

The other thing I like about it is that A LOT of people use this application! The app lets users report prices directly from within the user interface so with so many people using it to find cheap gas, there’s a lot of people that can help keep the prices current.
