If you happen to own an iPhone or an iPad, it’s time to do an operating system update. Apple recently released iOS 8.2 and in my opinion, everyone should update their devices to this latest version right away.

Not because it will wow you with a bunch of amazing new features. Not because it will make your device faster and easier to use. Apple has reportedly fixed a number of bugs that existed in earlier versions of their mobile OS but the main reason I recommend updating is because they patched a very serious security vulnerability that has affectionately been dubbed as the “FREAK” bug.

iphoneIt seems like we’re living in a world where a new security bug is being revealed and announced to the public on nearly a daily basis. So much so that many mobile device users are becoming desensitized to the flood of security warnings that they are being bombarded with. Make no mistake, FREAK is not just a little bug. It’s a pretty big deal and it affects everything from smartphones to computers.

Let me take just a minute and give you a brief explanation of what this particular vulnerability is all about. In the 1990’s, the National Security Agency wanted to make sure that it could intercept and decipher secure Internet activity of people in other countries. Consequently, they put regulations in place that limited the level of encryption that software developers could put in place for web browsers. This was done to leave a “backdoor” for US intelligence officials to use for whatever purposes they felt they needed to.

This rule changed sometime around the year 2000 but for some strange reason, software developers didn’t think to change with it and right up until very recently, this security backdoor still existed in all kinds of software, including iOS.

In this day and age, you really can’t afford to take Internet security lightly. Identity theft is growing at an astronomical rate and walking around with a smartphone that has security loopholes in it’s software is a really bad idea.

So, if you own and use an Apple smartphone or tablet and you haven’t taken the time to update to version 8.2, I highly suggest that you put doing this update on your shortlist of priorities.

How to Perform the Update

For those of you who may not know how to do the update on your Apple mobile device, I have an article that you might want to read called How to Update iPhone Operating Systems.
