Join Me in My Quest to Find a Legitimate Method for Doing IMEI Number Tracking Online
From time to time, I get emails from people who have lost their phones and want to know if IMEI number tracking is actually possible. If you’re reading this article, you are either familiar with the term IMEI or you are trying to educate yourself about the subject. Either way, I hope to meet your expectations with this article today.
First, let me briefly describe to those people who might not be familiar with the term IMEI what it is that we’re actually talking about here. There are plenty of very boring websites that contain all the technical details when it comes to this technology but the purpose of this article isn’t to become one of them.
I want the information on my website to be easy to read and understandable by everyone who happens upon it. I don’t want to be writing just for the “nerds” of the world. There are plenty of us “super geeks” who can’t seem to get enough information in our heads when it comes to the technical details surrounding cellular technology.
Despite the fact that I often feel like I’m writing specifically to those types of individuals, the emails I get seem to indicate that the majority of people who actually read my website are “average Joe’s” who are looking for information that will help them get up to speed in the exciting world of mobile phone tracking technology. With that in mind, I’m going to be making a conscious effort to keep my articles straight forward and easy for the “non geeks” of the world to understand.
What Exactly Is IMEI?
There is a standard by which many cellular networks are built upon and it is called GSM or Global System For Mobile Communications. The first ever GSM network was powered up in 1991. Since then, it has become the most widely used system for cellular networks. Because of these “standardized” networks, it’s possible for cell phone users to roam (travel outside of their cellular service carrier coverage area) and still be able to make and receive phone calls. This is due to the fact that the system that their phone functions on is the same as other wireless phone networks that are in use today.
In order to make this possible, every GSM cell phone has a unique number that it is identified by. This number is called the IMEI number or International Mobile Equipment Identity number. You might think of this number like your phone’s individual “fingerprint”. This number is unique to your phone and makes your phone identifiable to various cellular networks around the world. You can determine your phone’s IMEI number by pressing *#06# on your keypad on many mobile phones. This doesn’t work with some phones so refer to your phone’s instruction manual for instructions on how to determine the number for your specific phone.
Why Are People Interested In IMEI Tracking?
Okay, so now that you have a little background, you should know that people who are interested in tracking a cell phone by IMEI search would like to know how to track a cell phone by simply entering this number into a service on the Internet. In most cases they want to do this because they’ve either lost their phone or they’ve had their phone stolen.
I’ve been searching the Internet for a service that might allow you to do this and I found one that appears to me to allow you to do IMEI tracking. The website for the service that I’m referring to is www.trackimei.com. When I visited the website to test the service the site says that all you have to do is register with them and give them your 14/15 digit IMEI number. Then, if any of the dealers that they work with around the globe identify a mobile phone that has your IMEI number, trackimei.com will contact you with the details.
Here’s a video showing you how to find the IMEI number for your phone regardless of the type of phone that it is.
Sound Too Good To Be True?
This sounds like a great service, right? Well, that’s kind of what I’m thinking too but I haven’t really researched this process enough to form an educated opinion just yet. Eager to test this service out, I clicked on the button to register and absolutely nothing happened. Eventually a page popped up that said “Server Error in ‘/’ Application”.
8-13-2011 Update: I tested this link again today and a page actually did display that allows users to input the IMEI number for their phone as well as a bunch of other information.
11-27-2013 Update: I just clicked the “register” button again and I was taken to a website called searchlostmobile.com/register. I’m not sure if this is the same company or if they are just affiliated with trackimei.com.
I tried to look for an FAQ page to get more details about their service but the site doesn’t seem to have one. I then clicked on the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of the page to ask the site owner more details about what service their company actually provides but when I clicked on “send”, I got the same error that is mentioned above. Next I clicked on a link that was labeled “Disclaimer” and I was finally able to find their email address. Unfortunately, shortly after sending an email to them I received an auto-response email stating the following:
THANKS FOR YOUR FEED BACK THIS IS AUTO RESPOND MAIL.
TELL ABOUT THIS SITE TO YOUR NEAREST MOBILE SHOPS OR MOBILE STORES CAUSE IF SOMEONE GO THERE FOR SELLING YOUR MOBILE THEY WILL CHECK THEFT REPORTS BY PUT AN IMEI. AND IT IS ALSO RECOMMEND TO YOU THAT ALWAYS CHECK IMEI AT www.trackimei.com BEFORE BUY USED MOBILE PHONE. IF THEFT REPORT FOUND DON’T BUY AND CONTACT CONCERN PERSON BY PHONE OR MAIL
What’s The Bottom Line?
Based on this information, it doesn’t appear to me that service works for phone tracking by entering and IMEI number like you might hope it would. If you’re looking for a service that you can simply enter your phone’s IMEI number in to find its location, this doesn’t appear to me to be the right choice for you. As a matter of fact, I’m not aware of any service that can actually do this.
If you’ve used this this service successfully to find a lost or stolen phone please let me know. I would also love to hear from the company behind this service. If you would care to send me details about how your service works, I’ll gladly publish them here on my website.
The process of writing this article has inspired me to test various IMEI tracker services that “claim” to be able to locate your cell phone by simply entering the IMEI number or your cell phone number. I’ll be writing about each service that I test in the the future so be sure and check back often if you are interested in learning about this aspect of cell phone tracker technology.
Update 8-13-2011: I wish I could report that I have more to tell you about IMEI number tracking but unfortunately my ambition level when it comes to researching this matter more has been a bit low because I have so many other projects in the works. I can tell you that in an attempt to get a statement from the people behind the scenes of this website, I sent another email to them today. I’m hoping that they respond to my email to help me better understand what it is exactly that their service can do for those who are looking for a legitimate IMEI number tracking service. If they reply, I’ll update this post then.
I recently received an email from someone who was also searching for a service that can actually do IMEI tracking. They reported to me that they haven’t been able to find a service that can actually do this. That email has inspired me to reach out to my readers. If you are aware of a service that can actually determine the location of a cell phone simply by entering either the phone number or IMEI number, PLEASE let me know so I can inform my readers about it.
Likewise, if you are a representative of a company that offers a service that has these capabilities, please let me know and I’ll be happy to include a statement on my website about your service.
